What is Emotion Coaching?

Emotion coaching is a parenting style that focuses on helping children understand and manage their emotions effectively. It involves recognising and validating a child’s emotions, helping them label and understand their feelings, and teaching them healthy ways to express and regulate their emotions.

Emotion coaching typically involves five key steps:

  1. Becoming aware of a child’s emotions: Parents need to pay attention to their child’s emotional cues and be aware of how their child is feeling.
  2. Recognising emotions as an opportunity for intimacy and teaching: Parents should view their child’s emotions as an opportunity to connect with them, validate their feelings, and teach them healthy emotional skills.
  3. Listening empathetically and validating the child’s feelings: Parents should listen attentively to their child’s emotions and express understanding and empathy. This helps the child feel heard and supported.
  4. Helping the child label and understand their emotions: Parents can help their child develop emotional intelligence by teaching them to identify and label their emotions accurately.
  5. Setting limits while exploring strategies to solve problems: Finally, parents should help their child develop healthy coping strategies for managing their emotions and solving problems constructively.

Emotion coaching has been shown to be an effective parenting style for promoting emotional intelligence, resilience, and healthy social and emotional development in children.
